“France supports companies that believe in the country, its President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview published on Wednesday, in response to a question on oil major TotalEnergies’ potential pursuit of a U.S. listing. A pillar of France’s CAC 40 blue chip index, TotalEnergies is one of the world’s largest oil companies and an important agent of French influence. A change of listing would also be a blow to Paris’ prestige as a centre for international trading.”

“China’s state-controlled CNOOC expects domestic natural gas consumption to peak at 700bn m³ in 2040, said CNOOC’s senior economist Xie Xuguang at a liquefied fuel shipping conference in Chongqing over 22-24 May. The conference was jointly organised by the China Shipowners’ Association and Langfang International Pipeline Exhibition. CNOOC also estimated China’s gas consumption to hit 410bn m³ in 2024. These most recent projections are aligned with earlier estimates from fellow state-controlled CNPC’s economic and technology research institute in Beijing, which forecast Chinese gas demand will rise by 24bn m³ in 2024 in its annual report published on 28 February.”

“The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on May 23 projected the most tropical cyclones ever in its early hurricane season forecast, and such storms could weaken energy demand and prices in landfall areas during what may be an otherwise warmer-than-normal summer. In particular, NOAA made the following forecast: 17-25 named storms, up from 14.7 for 1991-2023; Eight to 13 hurricanes, up from 7.2 for 1991-2023; Four to seven major hurricanes, up from 3.2 for 1991-2023. At the high end of the forecast, the season could equal 2020’s record seven major hurricanes and approach 2020’s record 30 named storms and 2005’s record 15 hurricanes. “As one of the strongest El Nino ever observed nears its end, NOAA scientists predict a quick transition to La Nina conditions, which are conducive to Atlantic hurricane activity because La Nina tends to lessen wind shear in the tropics,” NOAA said. “At the same time, abundant oceanic heat content in the tropical Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea creates more energy to fuel storm development.”

“The footage from southwest Iowa is shocking: In the trail of a tornado, a wind turbine is bent in half like a cheap straw, its hub engulfed in flames and thick black smoke, its blades on the ground. “You’re seeing multiple of these big wind turbine towers that have been destroyed,” Zane Satre, a meteorologist for KCCI 8 News in Des Moines, told viewers. “These are big tall ones — I think they’re what, like 250 feet tall? Well that tornado took them out.” But it’s rare for tornadoes or other types of severe weather to destroy a wind turbine, said Fraser McLachlan, chief executive of GCube, a company that insures renewable energy projects like wind farms and solar arrays.”
